A series of online webinars will be hosted from 17 to August 28, 2020, by climate change experts. The webinars aim to reinforce the contribution of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to the Sixth Assessment Report.
About the IPCC
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides scientific assessments on climate change and develops climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was established by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988 to provide policy leaders with periodic scientific assessments on climate change and climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The IPCC assessments are a crucial contribution to international negotiations on climate change tackle. The reports are prepared and reviewed in several stages, which guarantees their objectivity.
About the IPCC Assessment Report
At the 41st Session, held in February 2015, the IPCC decided to prepare the Sixth Assessment Report.
The Sixth Assessment Report will focus on topics such as the relationship between consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. It will also touch upon the role of innovation and technology in the field of sustainable development and assess the relationship between short-term actions and their compatibility with the Paris Agreement's long-term goal. Notably, the report will be about sectors such as energy, agriculture, forestry, land use, transport, and industry in the context of sustainable development.
Each of the three IPCC Working Groups prepares inputs for the Sixth Assessment Report.
IPCC online events
Online events will be held for two weeks. The online webinars are hosted by 300 scientists and experts worldwide to reinforce the contribution of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to the Sixth Assessment Report.
The contribution of Working Group II to the Sixth Assessment Report includes an examination of the impacts of climate change on human and natural systems, their vulnerability and adaptability to climate change and developing options for creating a sustainable future for all through an equitable and integrated approach to adaptation.
"Dealing with the climate crisis, there is always an impact on people and society, ecosystems and biodiversity. That is why minimizing such impacts, including future pandemics and biodiversity loss, have become main subjects of integration in all Working Group II report chapters," said Hans-Otto Pörtner , Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II.
The purpose of the scheduled online events is to ensure consistency throughout the report and to facilitate coordination between chapters. Despite the challenges that authors and scientists face in the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis, work on the second-order project continues.
"At this uncertain time, public interest in the upcoming IPCC Assessment Report is growing. COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of an evidence-based response to global challenges. Considering the fact that climate change is one of the greatest global challenges we face this century, the IPCC must continue to provide scientific evidence to underpin bold and ambitious climate action," said Debra Roberts, Co-Chair of Working Group II IPCC.
The draft of the Second Working Group II Report will be open to government and peer review from December 4, 2020, to January 29, 2021, along with the first draft of the Executive Technical Summary. The fourth meeting of lead authors to finalize the draft is scheduled for March 2021.
There is a need to timely release the three working groups' reports and a consolidated report to inform the Global Stocktake of 2023 by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The reports will enable countries to review progress towards meeting the Paris Agreement targets, including progress towards keeping global warming below 2 °C while making efforts to limit it to 1.5 °C.
