In light of the recent world events, the whole world is gradually switching to an online format. Education is no exception. It was the global coronavirus pandemic that demonstrated how vital technology progress is for our lives.
Fortunately, Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin (CAMP4ASB) also does not stand aside from innovations. "Hydrological forecast using the MODSNOW-tool" is a training program developed for teachers, undergraduates, researchers, and all those interested in hydrological forecasting. The program has been developed with the financial support of the World Bank. The main objective of this training program is to teach advanced methods and tools used in hydrology. The main focus will be on the use of the MODSNOW-tool.
This program is targeted for students of the following disciplines: hydrology, geography, water resources management, climatology, meteorology. The course will be taught by the developer of the program himself - Mr. Abror Gafurov.
The MODSNOW-tool was developed by the project consultant Abror Gafurov with the support of the German Geosciences Center (GFZ Potsdam). This tool allows monitoring of snow cover and hydrological forecasting. What is especially noteworthy about MODSNOW is that it is adapted to the conditions of Central Asia. For the region, the introduction of detailed instruments is of particular importance due to the climate's aridity and the direct dependence of many sectors on the availability of water in summer. In other words, to carry out the necessary hydrological studies, the region needs tools such as the MODSNOW. Moreover, the region will also need specialists who can properly use these innovative tools. It is for this purpose that this training product was developed.
The course will consist of 10 lectures, which will also be accompanied by practical exercises. Within the framework of the program, students will not only get acquainted with the features of the MODSNOW-tool but also gain general knowledge about hydrology and hydrological forecasting, as well as get acquainted with the geographic information system (GIS), Quantum (QGIS) and software for processing statistical data R.
The introduction of this course is of particular importance to Central Asia. It increases the research potential of the region and provides more accurate and operational forecasts of river flow and monitoring of snow cover.
